What is the difference between HP 301 and HP 301XL ink cartridges?

301 ink cartridges - what's the difference between 301 and 301XL?

HP 301 ink cartridges come in two varieties; the standard capacity and the ‘XL’ high capacity, but what’s the difference?

Despite the name, both the HP 301 and the 301XL have exactly the same external dimensions. The key difference between the two is the amount of ink which is contained within, and therefore, the number of pages which can be printed before changing the cartridge.

The standard capacity HP 301 black cartridge contains 3ml of ink, giving an approximate yield of 190 pages.

The high capacity HP 301XL black cartridge contains 8ml of ink, which give a page yield of approximately 480 pages.

The same is also true of the tri-colour HP 301 cartridges. The standard capacity HP 301 colour cartridge contains 3ml of ink, with the HP 301XL colour cartridge containing 6ml.

Will HP 301XL cartridges fit my printer?

This is a common question, as the name of the cartridge implies that it will be physically bigger than a standard ink cartridge.

In fact, a 301XL cartridge will fit any printer that takes the standard capacity cartridges. So, if you usually use HP 301 ink cartridges, then you can also use the 301XL variety with out issue.
